Theme: 16 Days, 16 Voices

Hip-Hop artist Sipho The Gift’s foray into rap began with him trying to emulate the music he had heard while growing up. This changed when he realised he wanted to tell his own story. Understanding that there was a need for his unique voice in the South African Hip-Hop landscape, the 27-year-old began releasing music, starting with his 2015 debut EP, Coming of Age. Since then, Sipho The Gift has gone on to release a few more projects, including 2017’s Kintsugi which earned him a nomination for Best Hip Hop at the Urban Music Awards in London,
that year. His current EP, Bloom, was released earlier this year. For Sipho, young people have a great power within them. “We as young people are the most powerful force at the moment. We drive culture and make changes happen. We should take our collective power for granted,” he says.

Sipho The Gift is number 10 in the 16 emerging young artists we are profiling this month. In keeping with the essence of the 100 Beautiful things initiative and honouring South Africa’s youth, we are devoting 16 days to 16 beautiful things created by 16 young creatives who will
share their stories.
