30 | Painter & Illustrator | Cape Town

Theme: 16 Days, 16 Voices

Olivié Keck is a 30-year-old painter and illustrator based in Cape Town. Keck’s work speaks to the “theatre experience” and is rooted in the artist’s passion for and fascination with pop culture and contemporary storytelling.

“I think I just make the things that move me at the time and hope that they capture other people's hearts or resonate with them in some way. I feel grateful to have been able to make a career out of a creative process that allows me to gush and indulge my feelings or ideas. It’s hard work, but it’s also an amazing outlet” Keck says of her creative process. For the artist living and working through a time of Covid has been an introspective time. “I’ve experienced a lot of conflicting emotions and practical challenges, but I think it’s been a valuable time for growth. Globally this pandemic has set a lot of things in motion.  I think lots of our previous ways of life will not be returning to normal”.

Apart from having held five solo exhibitions in as many years, Keck has also had two international exhibitions — one at The Kala Art Institute in Berkley, USA and the other at the The Frans Masereel Centrum in Antwerp, Belgium

Oliviè Keck is the third of sixteen emerging young artists we are profiling this month. In keeping with the essence of the 100 Beautiful Things initiative and honouring South Africa’s youth, we are devoting the next 16 days to the voices of 16 cutting-edge young creators who will share their stories across our platforms.
