Theme: 16 Days, 16 Voices

Punk music and art — these are the two things that inspire Cape Townian Manie Fagodien’s creations. The 28-year-old’s multidisciplinary art, in particular the collage artworks created under his Tough Love moniker, carries with it both a nostalgic aura and an air of rebellion. A well known figure in Cape Town’s art and skate scenes, Fagodien has also collaborated with fellow Cape Town artist and streetwear designer, Anees Petersen for the latter’s YÔNGN LAYZEE fashion brand. He’s also collaborated with skate apparel brand Leaf Apparel and has worked as a production assistant for the launch shoot of Levi’s Strauss’ SilverTab range which is inspired by 90s counterculture. “I feel extremely privileged to be able to create works that evokes something or maybe even nothing in a person.” Fagodien says of the response to his art. “The opportunity to create without limitations or boundaries alone is something I am grateful for.”

Manie Fagodien is the eighth of 16 emerging young artists we are profiling this month. In keeping with the essence of the 100 Beautiful things initiative and honouring South Africa’s youth, we are devoting the next 16 days to 16 beautiful things created by 16 young creatives who will share their stories.
