No. 083 INNOVATION AND INSPIRATION BY DESIGN INDABA
Theme: Future Thinking
Design Indaba, Cape Town’s visionary festival of creativity dreamed up by Ravi Naidoo, celebrated its 25th birthday this year. The now global event, which features a world-famous conference, exhibitions, mentorship programmes, live music, theatre and masterclasses, has had a deep impact on the South African design industry.
An incredibly diverse event, Design Indaba celebrates all the creative sectors, including graphic design, advertising, film, music, fashion design, industrial design, architecture, craft, visual art, new media, publishing, broadcasting and performing arts, and promotes innovation on all levels.
Over the years, the conference has welcomed over 600 world-renowned speakers. Visionaries such as designers Tom Dixon and Yinka Ilori, architects Thomas Heatherwick and David Adjaye, chefs Elena Arzak and Ferran Adrià, and musicians Petite Noir and Imogen Heap, have taken to the stage to deliver thought-provoking and impactful talks, all of which imagine a better world through creativity.
Naidoo is equally passionate about nurturing new talent, through initiatives such as Design Indaba’s Emerging Creatives project. The programme, which has become renowned for identifying future designers, provides support, education and mentoring for its recipients, and has launched the careers of young creatives such as Laduma Ngxokolo, Thebe Magugu, Daniel Ting Chong and Renée Rossouw.
Design Indaba is relentless in its pursuit to create a global platform for the continent’s designers, and is constantly developing new opportunities, such as its 2018 project, which saw 10 African designers create a range for global furniture store, IKEA.
While the world is in turmoil, Design Indaba pushes on, innovating, nurturing talent and bringing change and impact to South Africa’s creative scene. All in the hope of a better tomorrow.
