No. 060 DANIEL MALAN
28 | Designer and Artist | Cape Town
Theme: 16 Days, 16 Voices
Daniel Malan is an artist who absorbs the world around him and interprets it through his drawings. The 28-year-old, based in Cape Town, comes from a family of artists and studied Fine Art at UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art before moving overseas to work in the menswear design department of Louis Vuitton. Upon his return to Cape Town, Malan began drawing, painting, designing and creating art. This led to his participation in a number of group exhibitions in the city. Of his love for creation, Malan says: “I love having the ability to document that I was present in time. I think artists have often strived to accomplish this and it is one of the ways art can be appreciated. It’s a joy to document the present world”.
His global outlook and fascination with how the internet contracts both time and space led to he and his artist brother Hayden jointly working on art from different parts of the world and sharing it on Instagram. “I think young artists around the world in the digital age can connect and collaborate in a way that’s unique to the present. I love that”.
Daniel Malan is number 10 in the 16 emerging young artists we are profiling this month. In keeping with the essence of the 100 Beautiful things initiative and honouring South Africa’s youth, we are devoting the next 16 days to 16 beautiful things created by 16 young creatives
who will share their stories.
