TAKING IT FAST AND SLOW AT BATTERY PARK

100 Beautiful Experiences

Thrill and chill are available in equal measure at Battery Park. Built on the remains of what was known as the Amsterdam Battery (constructed by the Dutch in 1784, and once a prison), this urban park is accessible directly from our precinct, or from Port Road, under Helen Suzman Boulevard, linking it directly to the city.

84. Rent a SUP

Stand-up paddling in the canals is made easy through SUP Cape Town, a company offering lessons and board rentals, with a store right on the ‘shore’. It’s hard to imagine that this area was Cape Town’s original shoreline before the land reclamation of the 30s and 40s, but this body of water offers a glimpse of that era.

85. Relax to the max

Whether chilling on the steps or basking on a beanbag on the lawns, this is a superb place to enjoy a midday break, surrounded by indigenous blooms and the sound of people enjoying the park’s activities. Watch out for the ball when mini soccer is being played!

86. Skate up and down ramps

Skateboarders find their kin here, showing off their latest tricks in between fist pumps. We like to think our skate park is the best in the city. It’s got everything from a bowl and pump hump to quarter pipes, a layback bank, hubba and rails – all available for you to use for free! Scooters are also welcome.

87. Throw some hoops

Our basketball court is open for the public, so gather your crew and set up a game, or just come on your own and practise your hoop tosses. Battery Park is open from sunrise to sunset.
