Awkward and complex with a quirk to her expression. That is how digital artist Natalie Paneng, 23, describes herself and her work. While photography and videography are her main mediums, the Johannesburg artist actually majored in Production Design and Arts Management at Wits where she graduated in 2018. In her work, she explores what it means to have an online presence and analyses the personas people create and develop to navigate the internet. Paneng does this through the creation of avant garde work whose aesthetic is deeply rooted in the vaporwave style of artistic expression. In 2019 she participated in Floating Reverie's online residency as well as the Faku'Gesi Digital Innovation Residency. Most recently, she exhibited in a virtual group show with The Mixed Reality Workshop (TMRW) Gallery in Rosebank, Johannesburg. For Paneng, being young and having the ability to create tangible art as authentically as possible and being able to share that work with others is something of great importance. This, according to her, would not be possible without the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976. “I am grateful for the actions taken to secure my future and my generation’s future, I hope we can make more moves in the direction of transformation and healing.” she says.
