MEET THE MAKERS
100 Beautiful Experiences
We’re so excited about the Watershed reopening today. It’s going to be filled with the hustle and bustle of local design entrepreneurs showing off their latest products made during lockdown. Meeting the dynamic people behind the creative items is always an engaging and inspiring experience. Here are just some of the many makers you’ll come across when you visit.
6. Davis Ndungu – Recycled Flip Flop Sculptures Studio
Besides the popular animal sculptures that Davis so carefully carves out of blocks of stuck-together recycled flip flops, he’s now also fashioning yoga blocks, children’s toys, cellphone stands, mats and jewellery.
7. Bishop Tarambawamwe – Master Wire & Bead Craft
From life-size animals to ombre mirrors and every shape of bowl, Bishop’s meticulous way of working with beads is a delight to behold. Watching him in the zone is definitely witnessing a master in action.
8. Roger Bongolomba – Bongolomba’s Carvings
Catching Roger carving his wooden figurines and painting them in bright primary colours is a treat. Tin Tin and Asterix characters are created just as flawlessly by hand as rugby-player caricatures and suited-up animals.
9. Various artists – KnexT Art Gallery
Drawings, watercolours, oil paintings and sculptures can all be found at KnexT, where a great diversity of South African artists exhibit their work. This platform, introducing you to old and new local talent such as Moment K. Chaweza (pictured here), should be on your itinerary with every visit, as the art is always rotating.
We’ve included photos from two other great stores where handmade is king. At Cool Tabs you’ll find handbags and accessories designed by Aretha Doyle, made from recycled can tabs, while Township Arts & Music is where you’ll be compelled to move your body if you’re lucky enough to pass by while Dani Ngwenya is playing on one of his carefully crafted oil-drum guitars.
