Lazi Mathebula is an artist from Johannesburg who has created both illustrative and sculptural work. The 30-year-old is best known for his designs which have graced the walls of galleries as well as billboards. His work, which is inspired by the people and textures of urban Jozi, employs geometric shapes and vibrant, bright colours.

“As people, we consume information differently, in a very personal way. Therefore, my approach will differ based on my life experience and perspective to the world around me,” he explains. Mathebula also founded the urban streetwear brand, Beautiful Boys in 2017.

After growing disillusioned with the creative industry, Mathebula shifted his medium and now creates metal sculptures. This move culminated in his first solo exhibition, Shadows of My Freedom, at the Kalashikovv Gallery in his native city in January.
