100 Beautiful Experiences

This Heritage Day, why not follow our audio tour called Reinventing the Tavern of the Seas, which gives you a glimpse of the history of our neighbourhood? Download the VoiceMap app, select Cape Town and find our free walking tour, which starts at Ferrymans Tavern and ends at the Zeitz MOCAA. It works offline and uses GPS to play audio automatically at the right time and place. If done in one go, the tour takes about an hour. These are just five of the many, many things you’ll see:

78. Time-ball Tower

This brick structure is one of the oldest in our neighbourhood. It’s called the Time-ball Tower because the ball on the top of it used to be dropped on the hour every day to help ships reset their time when out at sea. Sailors always kept watch of it with their binoculars.

79. Pumphouse

The Pumphouse is now home to the Cape Town Comedy Club, but this stone building was once a powerful generator of electricity. In 1882, it powered Africa’s first electric lights!

80. Tea Room

Life Grand Café used to house a post office and tea room and is the place from which Capetonians boarded passenger ships back in the day, heading to Europe, with family and friends waving them off after a final cup of tea and scones together.

81. Clock Tower

The second floor of this red building has a mirror ceiling which helped the port captain see ships coming and going from every direction.

82. Grain Silo

Today marks the third birthday of the Zeitz MOCAA. Before it was transformed into an art museum, with the Silo Hotel above it, it was a 1920s silo that had become derelict. What was once a grain-storage building now exhibits some of Africa’s finest contemporary artwork, in a space reimagined by British architect Thomas Heatherwick.

Remember to tag us when you embark on this tour, and show us the many other historical places on the route.
