How do you find moments of powerful silence in a city that is as busy and loud as Johannesburg? You take a step back and let those muted voices speak for themselves — on their own terms. That’s how photographer and multimedia designer Dahlia Maubane approaches her work and expresses her voice.

Her ‘Woza Sisi’ photo series provides a purposely impartial, yet involved look at women’s hair, especially in the CBDs of Johannesburg, through the eyes of informal hair salons. “I am particularly interested in the photographer that does not merely frame and take an image, but rather, facilitates dialogue and interaction with the individual,” Maubane says.

Maubane’s work as a photographer has taken her to different parts of the world, including New York, Amsterdam, Salzburg as well as Lagos and Harare. “I have to document our daily lives and create archives for people that are coming after us so they can see how things have progressed,” Maubane says of the inspiration behind her work.
